Step 1. Revision:

Look at some pictures of the girl, Yu Mei. Ss talk about them use the phrase “used to” 

Step 2. Guess

Work in small groups, one student talk about a member in the group, let other groups guess who he / she is.

Report: He used to … but now he … .

She used to … , but now she ….Who is he / she ?

Step 3. Presentation

Look at the picture of some big dogs.

T: Are you afraid of dogs?I’m afraid of big dogs.  Ss: … 

Then learn the sentence.

I used to be afraid of big dogs.I’m still afraid of big dogs.

Step 4. Learn and Practice (3a)

1. Learn the words or phrases with the pictures , big dogs / snakes / high places / the dark / being alone / flying in an airplane / speaking in front of a group.

2. Then Ss talk about themselves .

I used to be afraid of ….I’m still afraid of … 

3. Work on 3a.

Ss put checks(√) in the first two columns.Practice in pairs.

A: Did you use to be afraid of snakes?B: Yes, I did.

A: Are you still afraid of snakes?B: No, I’m not.

Step 5. Pairwork(3b)

1. Learn the phrase, be terrified of.

2. Work on 3b, Ss put checks(√) in the last two columns.

3.Do the pairwork

A: Did you use to be afraid of the dark?B: Yes, I did.

A: Are you still afraid of the dark?

B: No,  I’m not. How about you?

A: Me? Oh, yes. I’m terrified of the dark.

B: So, what do you do about it?

A: I go to sleep with my bedroom light on.

Step 6. Survey(4)

1. Ss do the survey to fill in the chart with the questions.

What did you use to eat? What do you eat now?…

2.Then one student make a report.

My friend … used to eat …, but now he / she eats ….

Step 7. Srm up

1.  I used to be afraid of the dark.

→ Did you use to be afraid of the dark?  Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
